John Legend opened up about his wife Chrissy Teigen’s late-term abortion and why it was necessary.
Speaking to Shannon Sharp on the Club Shay Shay podcast, Legend revealed details about Teigen’s pregnancy complication in 2020 that led to the decision for her to get an abortion.
“My wife, she was well past 15 weeks when she had to have an abortion,” said Legend. “She was miscarrying and bleeding out, and all these things were happening.”
“Her life was in danger,” Legend said after Sharpe.
Legend kept going, confirming that his wife’s life was in danger due to partial placenta abruption — a life-threatening condition that impacts both the mother and fetus. He used his wife’s situation to talk about abortion rights in the United States.
“They’re saying the government needs to evaluate whether you are sufficiently dying before you can have an abortion — not your doctor, not you and your family, right? The government,” he explained. “No, stay out of it, right? Let these women — let them and their families and their doctors — make these decisions. We don’t need the government to be involved in it.”
“Women don’t need the government telling them what to do with their bodies,” Legend continued. “People that have an abortion after 15 weeks almost always they wanted to keep the baby but there’s some kind of complication that came up that they have to have an abortion.”
Back after the abortion for their son, Jack, Teigen shared the news on Instagram with a heartbreaking post about the situation. “We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before,” she wrote. “We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough.”
In 2023, Legend and Teigen welcomed their fourth child, Wren Alexander Stephen, via surrogate.
